South Korea’s flagship carrier HMM has officially become the eighth member of the industry’s exclusive “TEU millionaires club,” according to the latest analysis by Alphaliner. The company’s fleet capacity now stands at 1,007,180 TEU, marking a major milestone as HMM’s operated capacity has doubled over the past five years. The 2020s have so far been recorded as the most profitable decade in container shipping history, Alphaliner noted.
HMM’s growth trajectory looks set to continue with a series of newbuilds under construction at South Korean shipyards. In 2026, the carrier is scheduled to take delivery of five vessels in the 8,500–9,000 TEU class, followed later in the decade by twelve 13,000 TEU newbuilds.
In September 2024, HMM announced an expansion plan through 2030, allocating KRW 23.5 trillion (USD 17.48 billion) to nearly double its container fleet while tripling its tanker and dry bulk fleets by the end of the decade.
In the latest Alphaliner carrier rankings, HMM ranks eighth, just behind Taiwan’s Evergreen, which is expected to surpass the 2 million TEU mark soon. Japan’s Ocean Network Express (ONE) recently reached this milestone, while at the top of the chart, Søren Toft-led Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) is on track to set another record by crossing the 7 million TEU threshold in the coming months.
